Community Service
In All Things, Love
“In essentials, Unity. In non-essentials, Liberty. In all things, Love.”
Moravian motto
Community service is a core element of life at Salem Academy, inspired by our Moravian roots and embedded throughout our programming.
A Pledge to Service
All Salem’s student clubs and organizations are required to fulfill a service project. Students can also participate in one of our service-oriented clubs:
- Key Club
- Girl Up
- Student Ambassadors
“At Salem, we have community service days where we go to different non-profit organizations and help. I think many of us feel blessed to be at Salem, so we want to give back to the community that helps Salem flourish.”
Emma Shelby A’21
Learning through Service
During January Term, freshmen and sophomores participate in a day of service in Winston-Salem. Recent activities include volunteering at
- Second Harvest Food Bank
- SECU Family House
- Sunnyside Ministries
Students have also
- Take an anti-bullying class and work with local students at Summit School
- Volunteer at Diggs-Latham Elementary School
Annual School Halloween Party
Students show their Halloween spirit by hosting an annual Halloween Party for foster families and families from a local elementary school. Academy students plan a variety of activities for the children, including Halloween-inspired games and trick-or-treating in the residence halls.
This tradition, which started in the 1980s, has become one of the school’s most beloved events!
