On Being Thankful: A Message from the Head of School

Wednesday, November 26, 2014
I am thankful for

“When it comes to life, the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.” – Gilbert K. Chesterton

Every year before Thanksgiving vacation, Dean of Students Mary Lorick Thompson puts up several sheets of paper next to her office door, and she encourages students to jot down things for which they are thankful. Inevitably, the sheets fill up!

Here are just a few of the items I enjoyed reading this year:

  • My Salem Academy Family (this one appeared many times!!).
  • My mom for loving me.
  • Jerome the Fish…Blub, Blub.
  • For the chance to attend Salem Academy and meet all new people!
  • I am thankful that God loves me no matter what!
  • My mother, father, all my friends and my teachers.
  • My mom and how strong she is!
  • My Day…My Life…My Family…and My Music.
  • I am thankful for ANDY GRIFFITH!
  • My Salem friends who have become my sisters.
  • Food.
  • Netflix!
  • My awesome family and all they do for me.
  • My brother.
  • The creation of Cheetos!
  • My Puppy, violins, my awesome roommate.
  • Kinderschokolade!
  • Salem Academy and all it has to offer.
  • Chocolate.
  • Jimmy Page.
  • Miss T. and all that she does for us.
  • Disney Movies.
  • Led Zeppelin.
  • One Direction.
  • A roof over my head.
  • Jesus!
  • Biscuits.
  • Cookie Break.
  • Drama.
  • For the small things my parents do for me.
  • For the fact that I can receive an education.
  • I’m thankful for whoever is reading this right now!
  • God’s love is the best!

There are many more “jottings;” in fact, there are three pages worth! I’ll share one more and this one’s from me: I’m thankful for Academy parents and for their amazing daughters, who have embraced our Salem community for so many wonderful years. Academy students and their loved ones have blessed us mightily by allowing us to be part of their families. So, thank you, and I pray that you and your family have a safe, relaxing, and peaceful holiday.

God bless,

Karl Sjolund
