Salem Academy’s Model United Nations club sent twenty-seven students to the Fall 2014 High School Model UN Conference, hosted at Appalachian State University, on November 12 and 13. Eighteen high schools from across the region participated, sending a combined total of more than 300 student delegates.
Academy students were divided into fifteen delegations, representing the nations of Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Lebanon, Sudan, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The conference offered a hands-on experience, as students stepped into the shoes of international ambassadors and competed in a variety of simulated United Nations committees; including the Human Rights Council, Arab League, General Assembly, Crisis Security Council, G20, Economic and Social Committee, and the World Health Organization.
Delegations that included Academy students won first-place awards at the conference. Seniors Mary Beth Browne and Anna Berrier, who represented the United Kingdom on the Crisis Security Council, and senior Laura Harkleroad, who represented Costa Rica on the Human Rights Council, were recognized.
Chris Royster, Academy history teacher and 2014 recipient of the Joel Weston Award for Faculty Excellence, is advisor to Salem’s chapter of Model UN.
