After receiving the 2014 Semple Award, granting $4,000 for international study, Salem Academy Latin teacher Lauren Rogers dedicated her summer vacation to living in Greece and studying at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens Summer Session. While in Athens, she conducted research at the famed Blegen Library, which led to finalizing two site reports for the program: the Library of Hadrian and Pella.

With ample opportunities to travel throughout the country, Rogers found that visiting the temple of Apollo at Bassae, touring the Aghios Vassilios excavation near Sparta, and exploring the Corycian Cave of Pan near Delphi the most memorable. After viewing kernoi (Grecian pottery) at Gournia and finding a rota gameboard, she was inspired to design a teaching unit on games and leisure activities for her Latin pupils. While abroad, Rogers also sent postcards, written in Latin, to her students at Salem Academy.

Lauren Rogers received degrees from Barnard College and the University of Georgia before coming to teach Latin at Salem Academy in 2007. She has accompanied students on international travel to Spain and Portugal, served as the chair of the Academy’s Strategic Planning and SAIS/SACS Accreditation Committees, and is the 2012 recipient of the Elsie Nunn Headmaster’s Award.
